The end of June 2007 saw the beginning of my position as artist in residence within the School of Biosciences at University of Birmingham. It is the result of the School of Biosciences affirmative and proactive response to an Arts Council of England initiative to position artists within contexts of industry or academia towards creating new partnerships and possibilities of cultural production.
My intention is to pursue and extend my research into using technologies of tissue culture and tissue engineering into a material and philosophical enquiry toward
The residency will endeavour to investigate some of the questions and thoughts I have about the body/my body/other bodies and life within the context of contemporary science, biotechnologies, explorations begun whilst artist in residence at SymbioticA between 2003 – 04 and funded by a Wellcome Trust sciart award.
These investigations move between materiality and metaphor; investigating productions of knowledges, meaning and engagement within a terrain of fleshy semantics, and a poetic corporeality, resonating with Dona Haraway’s ideas of a sacramental consciousness.
This blog will function as a document, archive and repository for the research activities of the residency, and to contextualise it within a larger discourse. Comments, discussion and input is welcome.
Note: The residency ended in Decmeber 2007. It’s outcomes will hopefully be pursued in a further residency, funding pending.
